MAZAGAN MASTER PLAN
EL JADIDA, MOROCCO
Mazagan is an open site of 1400 Hectares (3400 acres) that lies between Azemmour and El Jadida on the Atlantic coast of Morocco. With an existing heavy rail line along the adjacent freeway and a planned light rail line available to become a spine circulator for the new development for 50,000 people.
The primary concept is to divide the site into four village developments, each arranged around a central public plaza (modeled after the Sienna town square), all of which are served by the light rail stops. The development centers are separately focused on retail, education, health care and entertainment. Each are separated by a large natural open space and surrounded by phased residential development. The roadway organization is hierarchical featuring an array of boulevards, neighborhood streets and service roads. Only emergency vehicles are allowed on the central plazas to insure a fully pedestrian environment and no conflicts with the light rail stop.
