580 CALIFORNIA

SAN FRANCISCO, CA

Originally designed by Philip Johnson in the 1980’s this building was conceived as a signature office building of the period. The design character is vaguely French, but uniquely adorned with faceless statues at the roof cornice. The lobby, like much of Johnson’s work at the time utilized the same exterior granite along with additive bronze metal work light fixtures and renaissance floor patterns.

The renovation strategy was simply to counter the heaviness of the materials with a lighter marble inset, which, in turn, terminate into back-lighted free standing walls. A new reception desk creates the focus and fundamental purpose of the lobby and new wall wash strips integrated into the existing ceiling detail light the walls throughout the space.

Finally the tapestry from the aspired French period has been replaced by a new version of the faceless statues at the top of the building. Orange in color suggesting both a continuity, a wit, and an extension of the most unique aspect of the building in a fresh new manner.
