Thor Equities to break ground on luxury project off Kirby Drive

September 29, 2015

Construction will start next month on a long-awaited mixed-use development planned along Kirby Drive, a developer said Tuesday after securing construction financing for the 1 million-square-foot project.

The new development, which will include residential, office, retail and entertainment space, will be built at 3200 Kirby on land bounded by Kirby, West Main, Colquitt and Lake Street.

New York-based Thor Equities is developing the project, called Kirby Collection.

A 25-story residential tower will have 199 apartments, seven townhomes and seven two-story lofts with private yards. The units will overlook a deck spanning more than an acre with a pool, cabanas, fire pits and a bar area. The top floor will have a “Skyview Suite” with a kitchen open to all residents.

A 13-story, 210,000 square-foot-office building and two levels of retail space, filling 65,000 square feet, will also be part of the complex.

“With the Houston metropolitan area experiencing healthy population gains fueled by continued strength in the economy, the demand for luxury residential, office and retail space in the city remains strong,” Joseph Sitt, Thor’s CEO, said in a statement. “Kirby Collection is primed to become the most sought after address in Houston, redefining modern luxury and creating the ultimate live-work-play community in one of Houston’s most affluent areas.”

Thor Equities has owned the property for at least five years. The site includes several bars and a commercial building that housed the Cafe Express restaurant.

The project is scheduled to break ground in October and open by the end of 2017. Richard Keating is the architect and Dianna Wong Architecture + Design is the interior designer. Houston-based Kirksey is the architect of record.
